Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is reportedly planning to undergo surgery that would knock him out for the remainder of the 2024 NFL season, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported.

However, the call has yet to be made final, as Prescott is still seeking additional opinions to avoid the final outcome. According to Schefter, Cowboys doctors believe surgery is needed. Stephen Jones told 105.3 The Fan he was going on IR. The quarterback is set to see one more hamstring specialist on Monday to seek an alternative route.

Prescott suffered a hamstring injury that knocked him out of Week 9's loss to the Atlanta Falcons while following through a pass.

The Cowboys notably didn't place Prescott on Injured Reserve on Saturday, a sign they're supporting the quarterback in his search for a different path that would allow him to return to play before the 2024 season is over.

On the one hand, you've got to admire Prescott's efforts to return later in the season. On the other, it could be a stubborn approach. The season is practically over at 3-5 and by the time he's able to return, there's a high likelihood the Cowboys are further removed from a playoff bid. Returning while risking re-injury could be a problem that becomes a factor for 2025.

At the end of the day, it's unsurprising that an NFL quarterback wants to fight before calling it a year. However, it's clearly expected that he'll end up going through surgery and missing the rest of the year.
