After news on the Dallas Cowboys waiving linebacker Rashaan Evans ahead of Week 17, more information has come to light that provides much-needed context.
It turns out, the news hit the wire a day after Evans was arrested by police in Frisco, Texas. Per Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, Evans was arrested on charges for possession of Marijuana, between two and four ounces.
Before the report, the roster move generated controversy among fans, content creators, and media, with many arguing he should've received a bigger chance at earning a role and seeing the field at LB.
Although the news clarifies part of the decision the Cowboys made on Evans (we can discuss where Texas is at regarding Marijuana policy some other time), the truth is it's explained not just by off-the-field issues but an underwhelming performance on the field.
Evans had a very limited role with the Cowboys since being signed mid-October. He accounted for a 7% snap count on defense and 20% on special teams, per Pro Football Reference. In his limited playing time on defense, Evans struggled versus the run and failed to earn a significant role, passing the 20% mark in eight of his nine games played.
Evans' roster spot already has a name on it and it's OT Matt Waletzko, who was simultaneously activated off of Injured Reserve. Waletzko will provide the Cowboys with much needed depth on the offensive line.
That being said, the team still has plenty of reason to be concerned about its depth at linebacker. Beyond Markquese Bell and Damone Clark, there's only Tyrus Wheat on the 53-man roster. The Cowboys could turn to the practice squad for additional help but it's clearly an unideal situation to be in.
This has been a concern the team has tried to solve but failed at doing so: They brought in Evans, who didn't deliver and they flirted with Shaquille Leonard (who signed with the Philadelphia Eagles) after failing to pull off a trade, which they sought before the trade deadline.
