Dallas Cowboys’ latest roster signing could tease an even bigger change to the offense starting in Week 2 vs. Giants
The Dallas Cowboys are one step closer to shaking things up on offense.
Following the Dallas Cowboys’ season-opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, I listed three personnel changes the team should make. One of them was about the WR3 spot, where I called for Ryan Flournoy to compete for Jalen Tolbert’s snaps following an underwhelming performance from the latter.
Such a change could already be underway based on the team’s latest roster move.
The Cowboys are signing WR Ryan Flournoy to the 53-man roster, the team announced Saturday. Flournoy, a second-year player, was on the practice squad and was a gameday elevation in Week 1, mostly appearing on special teams. However, his participation on offense could be about to grow significantly.
Signing Ryan Flournoy to the 53-man roster shows higher commitment to the player
Flournoy’s signing is partially a product of DT Perrion Winfrey heading to Injured Reserve and opening a roster spot. However, it’s also a show of commitment to the player. That’s not to say he’s immune to being waived later on (at some point, Jonathan Mingo is going to return from IR), but this is clearly a promotion.
And it’s one he could take advantage of with quality play starting on Sunday. Tolbert hasn’t done enough to be “safe.” He’s struggled blocking and hasn’t shown much improvement in creating separation. Flournoy deserves a chance to compete, and being a part of the 53-man roster should open the door for him.
Flournoy was always going to be a developmental player when he was drafted last year. Let’s find out what he’s got in Year 2.
Cowboys elevate two players from practice squad
In addition to signing Flournoy to the 53-man roster, the Cowboys are also elevating cornerbacks Zion Childress and Robert Rochell from the practice squad. The defense needed better depth at the position, with DaRon Bland ruled out for the game.
Childress, who played nickel in the preseason, could be in a good spot to compete with Reddy Steward for snaps in the slot.
