The Dallas Cowboys are going through with their signing of WR Martavis Bryant following reports of a workout following the reinstatement of the former Las Vegas Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers player.
The news was broken by Shams Charania from The Athletic. Bryant will be added to the practice squad instead of the 53-man roster, as early reports indicated.
Bryant will join a Cowboys' roster that has some big names at the wide receiver position. The group is spearheaded by CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks. Michael Gallup and Jalen Tolbert seem to be locked in a battle for the full-time WR3 spot as the latter has been eating into the snaps of the former.
What can Cowboys fans expect from Martavis Bryant?
Bryant would've likely remained a starter if it weren't for off-field issues earlier in his career. He's been reinstated from an indefinite suspension handed upon him in 2018. That punishment was a follow-up to another suspension from 2016.
By being away from football for four full seasons and change, who knows where the 31-year-old veteran stands?
His best year, when he caught 50 passes for 765 yards in 11 games with the Pittsburgh Steelers happened in 2015. During his last year in the NFL, he caught 19 passes for 266 yards in 12 games.
At 6-4, Bryant still has some upside and he showed a knack for making some eye-popping plays years ago. Can he be the same type of player?
Chances are: Not really. But adding him to the roster gives the Cowboys some solid depth with experience. There's probably not going to be a better opportunity to make a low-risk bet on a player with as much upside as Bryant has considering he's done the professional football thing before.
And if he can give you one of these plays at this stage of his career, it might end up being worth it for a practice squad signing:
The Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions were also interested in the veteran for a reason, per Jordan Schultz.
Does Bryant change anything for the 2023 Cowboys?
Yes and no. I would assume the Cowboys' gameday roster won't look different any time soon. Although Gallup has struggled recently, Tolbert would be the guy taking his place assuming he is indeed benched. The staff likes KaVontae Turpin and scoring an impressive touchdown in Philadelphia surely helped.
But Bryant could be one injury away from playing deeper in the season. You can't have too many wide receivers in a passing league like the NFL. Consider it the classic, savvy bet the Cowboys make whenever a bargain is available.
For now, the Cowboys can take their time as they ease the veteran back into the grind of the league.
