Stephon Gilmore has had an ups-and-down kind of year with the Dallas Cowboys six weeks into the 2023 NFL regular season.
Gilmore's speed isn't the same in his 12th year in the league, which is understandable. That's cost him some big plays against some of the most talented wide receivers in the NFL. Having lost Trevon Diggs for the year on the opposite side certainly doesn't help.
However, he's still managed to provide solid coverage for the Cowboys. On Monday Night Football, he got to laugh last with the game-sealing interception as he seemingly defied gravity for a split second, enough to snatch the football into his hands before it hit the ground. A truly remarkable play from the former Defensive Player of the Year.
"I'm still here," Gilmore proclaimed to the camera on the Cowboys' Sounds from the Sideline YouTube series. A warning for NFL quarterbacks who might've written him off.
Gilmore's NFL passer rating allowed through six weeks ranks 24th out of 124 qualifying cornerbacks, per Pro Football Focus. He's allowing a 46.7% completion rate, ninth best in the league. He's still here indeed.
"It was a lot of back and forth all night," Gilmore told reporters postgame. "Just trying to keep that short-term memory. And I was able to make a play at the end, that's what big-time players do."
The Cowboys defense sure had its bad moments, but it was mostly good as the unit was put in bad situations all night long yet still managed to deliver. They pressured Justin Herbert at a very high rate, managed to play tight coverage (DaRon Bland was great this game), and even had safety Markquese Bell break out at linebacker.
At 4-2, the Cowboys go into the bye week with a lot of work to do, particularly on offense. As for Gilmore, make no mistake about it, he's still here.

It should be time for a change.
