When the Dallas Cowboys go through rookie minicamp this weekend, they'll do so with a special invitee at quarterback: Former Houston Cougar Donovan Smith.
Though the opportunity is unlikely to translate into a spot on the Cowboys' 90-man offseason roster, it's still a special one for someone like Smith, whose career has been the epitome of ups and downs.
A high school wide receiver turned quarterback in his senior year, Smith emerged as a QB prospect late but caught the attention of Texas Tech. Upon transferring to Houston in 2023, he had his best football throwing for 22 touchdowns in 12 games while completing 64.5% of his passes. At the time, he appeared to be a prospect one season away from establishing himself as a potential 2025 NFL Draft pick.
"Smith has a great set of physical tools," wrote Damian Parsons from The Draft Network. "2024 will be a big year for Smith’s development, potentially catapulting him into day one of the 2025 NFL Draft."
"If Smith can elevate his game and show improved pocket presence and decision-making, he could hear his name called earlier than expected on draft day," wrote Andrew Moore at NFL Draft Buzz.
Unfortunately, things didn't quite pan out for the 6-foot-5 quarterback during his senior season. Not only did he undergo shoulder surgery, his play took a big hit as he threw for four touchdowns and eight interceptions and was benched halfway through the season.
Though he's got the physical traits to entice some scouting departments, the reality is Smith needs film and reps to prove he can develop. The question is if playing catch-up is an option at this point of his career.
For now, Smith will be the quarterback for the Cowboys' rookie minicamp and will have a limited chance to show something to the coaching staff. If he does, it could be the start of an epic comeback for the kid who was once expected to blossom into an NFL Draft prospect.
