One of the most unsurprising but impactful decisions the Dallas Cowboys have made this offseason is to cut ties with wide receiver Michael Gallup.

Although the Cowboys signed Gallup to a five-year, $57.5 million contract back in 2022, there was always a clear out of the deal the team could take if things didn't work out. After a decline in Gallup's play over the last couple of seasons, the release was widely expected.

Now, the Cowboys are set to finally cash in on the benefits of having ripped off the band-aid.

You see, the Cowboys designated Gallup as a post-June 1st cut, which means his release won't open up any salary cap space until this Sunday, June 2nd. However, such a move allows the front office to open up more cap space in 2024 than they would get with a straight-up cut.

Specifically, the Cowboys will open up $9.5 million thanks to the Gallup release.

What could the Cowboys use this cap savings on?

Over the Cap calculates the Cowboys' current cap space at $3.86M. Adding $9.5M to it is obviously helpful but expectations from fans should be measured.

This won't help the team make any big-time free agency signings given the time of the year and the fact that the front office has been extremely conservative. Additionally, if the team truly wanted to make aggressive moves, they could've done more contract restructures and reached extensions with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, yet no progress has been made on either of those two deals per multiple reports.

The Cowboys could use the added cap space to finalize Marshawn Kneeland's deal, the one draft pick yet to officially sign his contract. The front office has also made late offseason signings in the past and that remains a strong possibility. If they do add somebody, chances are it'll be a low-cost veteran, however.

Otherwise, the Cowboys could simply have their cap space carry over to 2025, which would help them in their current financial reset they've admitted to be undergoing, going as far as claiming that they'll ask quarterback Dak Prescott to "do more with less" following a second-team All-Pro campaign.
