Despite a dramatic Week 2 win over the New York Giants, it didn’t take a football expert to realize the Dallas Cowboys have a pass rush problem. In two games without Micah Parsons, the defense hasn’t pressured opposing quarterbacks when rushing four.

Well, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones sweetened the victory postgame by announcing former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney signed with the team. The defensive end visited Dallas on a free agency visit earlier in the week.

Jadeveon Clowney signing will massively help Matt Eberflus’ defense

The news is big for Matt Eberflus’ defense, which gave up 506 yards of total offense to the Giants in a 40-37 win. Russell Wilson consistently found open receivers, with Wan’Dale Robinson recording 142 receiving yards and Malik Nabers 167. In part, it was because of busted coverages, but Wilson was comfortable in the pocket. Per PFF’s preliminary data, Wilson was kept clean in 82.4% of his dropbacks.

Signing Clowney should help the Cowboys in that department. Although he hasn’t fulfilled the expectations of a No. 1 overall pick, he’s been a productive pass rusher. In the last four years, he’s averaged 6.5 sacks per season.

Adding Clowney will help beyond the pass rush, too. He’s been a consistent run defender at defensive end through the years. The Cowboys need that in their DE room, which mostly features pass-rushing specialists.

The Cowboys’ defensive woes won’t be fixed entirely by Clowney

With that being said, the Cowboys’ secondary needs to play better. On Sunday, there were busted coverages everywhere in the defensive backfield. Whether it was cornerbacks or safeties, the defense looked like it didn’t know its assignments.

Eberflus needs to fix it quickly, or the Cowboys will need the offense to be near perfect to win ball games throughout the 2025 NFL season.
