The Dallas Cowboys may have two football games left on the schedule, but they are done for the season.

Even before the team kicked things off against the Los Angeles Chargers, their playoff chances officially sat at zero. A 34-17 loss only made such a harsh reality sting a little more. And yet, the remaining two games have to be played. So, how does quarterback Dak Prescott and the Cowboys stay motivated? His answer was pretty simple: It’s all he knows.

Dak Prescott says it’s all he knows

To the Cowboys quarterback, staying motivated and focused is all about the fact that this is his job. And it’s one he got through hard work, to the point that he can’t turn off such a mindset.

“I guess it’s different when you do this for a living,” Prescott told reporters. “And no, I’m not firing any shots—but I’ve said it over and over: This is our job. We’re blessed. We know how hard we’ve worked and the sacrifices it’s taken just to get to this league.

“For me, ten years in, to still be healthy—I told the team this, I think it was Friday or Saturday—this game has given us so much, how could you cheat it? I don’t know anything else. I’m not going to cheat this game. I’m going to give it everything I have. That’s just how my mind works. It’s not about flipping a switch on or off.”

Osa Odighizuwa delivers similar message to locker room

According to Prescott, standout defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa had a similar message to the team in the locker room after Sunday’s loss.

“Osa said it best when he broke the team down after the game,” Prescott added. “We’ve got two weeks left, and nothing’s promised in life—our football careers sure as hell aren’t. So let’s enjoy these two weeks. Cherish these moments, these practices, this time together with the men and brothers we love and have the opportunity to play with. This team won’t be the same next year. So let’s enjoy it and give it our best.”

Cowboys to continue to play to win

To back up the players’ remarks, the Cowboys will continue to play to win. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer even said the reason behind playing Tyler Smith at left tackle instead of at guard was because they’re playing to win. That’s been the message since the team’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

And those taking the field? You can expect them to be ready to go. Not necessarily because they’re getting fiery pregame speeches or watching a lot of motivational videos. But rather, as Prescott says, because that’s what they know. They’re professional athletes.

Can motivation translate to one or two wins before the season is over? That remains to be seen. So far, it hasn’t been nearly enough.
