Dak Prescott just made a promise that Cowboys Nation desperately needs him to make good on
The Dallas Cowboys need to change their ways. And Dak Prescott may be about to push them to do it.
Dak Prescott has made a lot of promises in his time as the Dallas Cowboys quarterback. But this one, fans need him to deliver on.
When talking to reporters ahead of a Week 17 matchup against the Washington Commanders on Christmas Day, Prescott suggested he can be better in one specific area, and it has nothing to do with the way he performs on the field. Rather, it’s all about his relationship with the front office.
Prescott the GM?
Not quite. But Prescott suggested he can have more input on the Cowboys’ approach to team-building. And considering next year will be his eleventh in the NFL, if the front office doesn’t consider his points of view, what are we doing?
“As you get older, you start having more input and more say,” Prescott told reporters. “You get asked more questions by the front office, and maybe there’s a little bit more that I can do. It’s not just about the physical side or me getting better at my game. Sometimes it’s about speaking up and saying, ‘This will help,’ or ‘I think this can help.”
Many quarterbacks who have been successful for a long time in the NFL have done exactly that. This is a team game, and one in which players can’t win single-handedly. Prescott—who is having one of his best individual seasons in his career despite an 6-8-1 record—is aware of it. And he appears to be ready to act on it.
“Whatever it takes, once again, I’m going to do my damnedest to make sure I’m influencing and encouraging everybody around me—not just the players—to do the same,” Prescott added.
To influence more than “just the players,” Prescott faces an uphill battle. For a long time, Prescott has mostly been a company man. Rarely does he take aim at the front office with strong remarks. At least behind close doors, he needs to pound the table.
Can Jerry Jones change his ways once and for all?
Regardless of Prescott’s intentions, the Cowboys have been doing things their way and their way only for a long time. Prioritizing the NFL Draft, bargain hunting in free agency, and approaching the salary cap with caution—to a fault.
Recently, I wrote a column on how unless Jones hires a general manager, it’s difficult to trust the front office to turn around the state of the Cowboys roster, particularly on defense.
But it’s starting to feel like there’s urgency brewing in Dallas. Prescott knows he’s playing his best football, and that doesn’t last long in the NFL. Jones knows he’s 83 years old. The franchise is aware Prescott’s contract aligns in time with CeeDee Lamb’s, Brian Schottenheimer’s, and several other key figures. It’s time to treat the offseason differently. It’s time to go all-in.
Can Prescott give the Jones family the nudge it desperately needs? Cowboys Nation might need to stay bought in when it comes to the short-term future.
