As Dak Prescott walked off the field and into the tunnel of MetLife Stadium following a 37-22 win over the New York Jets on Sunday, Dallas Cowboys fans bid him adieu with MVP chants. For the second consecutive week, the quarterback scored four touchdowns even without CeeDee Lamb on the field, this time down four starting offensive linemen and on the road.
If the votes were today and if win-loss record wasn’t that big of a factor, Prescott would be a Top 3 candidate for the award, if not the front runner. However, don’t get too excited just yet. For yet another week, the hype around Dak’s MVP chances was hit with a bucket of cold water by oddsmakers.
You would think another standout performance with as many injuries would put Prescott right up there with the odds-on favorites for the award but that’s just not the case at all. DraftKings has ten quarterbacks listed as favorites above the Cowboys quarterback, including Jalen Hurts (who hasn’t produced nearly as much), Lamar Jackson (who already missed one game), Jayden Daniels (who missed two games), and even Daniel Jones.
Why are Prescott’s odds to win MVP so low?
If Prescott is playing so good, why is he tied for 11th in the MVP betting odds? It’s simple. Historically, the award goes to the quarterback of the one-seed or two-seed of one of the conferences. Whether win-loss record should matter or not, in practice, it does for the voters. And the truth is the Cowboys have enough issues on their team to think about them owning a Top 2 record in the NFC. Starting the year with two wins in five weeks doesn’t help.
Since 2013, a quarterback has won MVP every single year. Each of those times, it’s been a team with a top two seed going into the playoffs. The Cowboys are unlikely to reach that level of success with the way the defense is playing even after an improved outing against the New York Jets.
Dak Prescott isn’t worried at all about winning MVP
But for the Cowboys quarterback, the conversation is irrelevant, mostly because he isn’t even focused on it.
“I mean, my ears work, so I heard [the MVP chants]— but I didn’t hear it,” Prescott told reporters postgame. “It’s Week 5. I don’t care. I wouldn’t care if it was Week 17. I’ve told y’all what I want — team goals. Right now, the success and the continued success that’s going to happen is just a result of all the guys in that locker room. To me, I didn’t play nearly as well of a game as I wanted to.”
That’s the kind of attitude that could take the Cowboys into the playoffs. But for now, it’s all about stacking wins, especially before the trade deadline. With a winning record by Week 9, Dallas could consider itself a buyer and potentially save the season. MVP talk can wait.
