The Dallas Cowboys have pulled off a buzzer beater. Hours before the 2024 NFL regular season opener, the team has secured quarterback Dak Prescott beyond the upcoming season.

The Cowboys and Prescott have agreed to a 4-year contract extension worth $240, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. The quarterback will average $60 million per year, five million more than Joe Burrow's and Trevor Lawrence's average. He'll get a whopping $231 million guaranteed and the largest ever signing bonus at $80 million.

The news comes right before the Cowboys kick off the regular season against the Cleveland Browns and with it, the entire contract drama can finally die off as we turn the page to actual football.

Suspicion confirmed: Dak Prescott becomes the first ever $60 million per year quarterback

Although a deal which average value per year started with a six was previously thought to be impossible, Prescott's new deal confirms the growing suspicion that he'd be the first quarterback ever to hit that mark.

That's not only a result of Dak's level of play, which earned him second place in MVP voting last year, but of the overwhelming leverage he held over the Cowboys thanks to a no-trade, no-clause tag that ensured he would've been able to hit free agency in 2025 had he wanted to. With the threat of an open bidding war for the quarterback where every other NFL team was invited, the Cowboys needed to embrace the fact that they'd need to reset the market at the most expensive position in football.

Back in June, ESPN's Adam Schefter said ""Dak has the most leverage of any player in the NFL. Dak is in a situation where he is the 2024 version plus of Kirk Cousins. Because he's got a clause in his contract. We can't be traded. He's got a clause in his contract where he can't be tagged (…) If you're (31 years old this season), and you're that talented and you have the ability to get to market, a true, true free agent, your leverage is off the charts."

Prescott made sure to use his leverage, as at one point he even said at training camp: "I want to be here but when you look up, all the great quarterbacks I've watched, they've played for other teams (…) My point in saying that is that that's not something to fear. That might be a reality for me one day."

The good news is now, Prescott doesn't have to wait until next year to cash in. He'll stay in Dallas through 2028 and he won't have to face the reality he admitted was possible of wearing another uniform.
