Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was fired up when his team beat the Kansas City Chiefs 31-28 on Thanksgiving. He had good reason to be. With the help of his two passing touchdowns, his squad kept playoff hopes alive for one more week.

But by the time the hype had passed and Prescott addressed reporters, the Cowboys quarterback spoke with the cold, hard truth. And it’s exactly what his teammates need to hear: These wins give the team confidence, but they don’t really matter yet.

“What’s important is what’s in front of us, and anything that we’ve done up to this point really doesn’t matter,” Prescott said. “We’re still in a tough position. Doesn’t mean we’ve got out of it just because of the two teams that we’ve beat. Next week’s just as important as this game was.”

Prescott is exactly right. After the win, NextGen Stats calculates the Cowboys’ playoff chances at 18%, which means the win over the Chiefs nearly doubled them. Prior to Thursday, it sat at 8%. But still, Dallas is a longshot and they’ll likely have to run the table for a seat in the postseason.

With that being said, Prescott admitted the Cowboys are gaining confidence as their win streak grows.

“These wins, all they’ve done is just given us more and more confidence,” Prescott said postgame. “And this brotherhood is as strong and as tight as I’ve been around and seen. And we’re playing elite, complimentary football right now. It’s not something that we can hang our hat on and say we’ve done. But we can build off of it and we can be proud of what we’ve done. But we’ve got to push forward knowing that’s all behind us.”

Prescott knows the NFC Playoff Picture isn’t promising

Not only did the Cowboys’ 3-5-1 record at the bye painted a bleak picture for the team, but it’s the current state of the NFC that gives Prescott urgency. Currently, six teams in the conference have 8+ wins, including the three currently positioned to be wild-cards.

“Simply because of what our record was and where we were, and not only that, just where the league is, and the NFC is with the wins, and those guys putting themselves ahead of us,” Prescott added. “It was ultimate urgency. Like I’ve said before, we can’t even think about the day past, the day that we’re on. We’ve just got to take it one game at a time. We can’t get overwhelmed. Just be the men that we are and trust the process, focus on getting better each day, and we’ll be able to put together wins like we have these past three games.”

It won’t be easy. And it starts within a week, when the Cowboys take on the 7-5 Detroit Lions on the road. But one thing is clear. This team is being led by the right men in Dak Prescott and head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Let’s see if they capitalize on their momentum.
