Former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn was named the new head coach of the Washington Commanders back in February.
It was a tough day for many Dallas fans to see Quinn move on to an NFC East rival after turning the Cowboys' defense into one of the most dangerous in the league.
But for a franchise like the Commanders that had been drug through the mud in more ways than one, there couldn't have been a better guy than Quinn to take over the vacant head coach job, according to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
"I can still remember even telling Mr. Jones when I left Dallas," Quinn said, "and he said, 'That's such an important fan base. Dan, you're the right man for that.' And so I appreciated that, this is from a competitor who knew the importance of this franchise to this city, and he saw that connection, firsthand. So it's really cool to be a part of."
Quinn's ability to form relationships and truly bond with his players is what makes him such a likable coach around the NFL. That trait has been extra crucial for Washington as they enter a new era with not only a revamped coaching staff, but also a new general manager and fresh-looking roster.
Other than Quinn, the most important addition to the Commanders has been rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, who was selected No. 2 overall in this year’s draft and is considered the future of Washington's franchise.
With so much change and such a young guy at the helm, the 2024 season is going to be a journey season for the Commanders.
But Quinn isn't worried about their record and is more focused on building a solid foundation for his players, something Washington hasn't seen in a long time.
“We want to start off and make sure our identity, and who we are and how we play, that has to come along strong,” Quinn said. “If you get that first and get that right, that’s when a lot of the success will follow. But you can’t put the record before you have the identity and who you are.”
That's why, as Jones said, Quinn is the perfect man for the Commanders' job.
