Deuce Vaughn just took a huge step in inserting himself back into Dallas Cowboys’ roster battle ahead of preseason opener
Is a RB shake up ahead for the Cowboys?
Deuce Vaughn doesn’t have an easy path toward a 53-man roster spot ahead of the Dallas Cowboys’ 2025 regular season.
Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders lead the Cowboys’ running back room as the projected starters while fifth-round rookie Jaydon Blue continues to turn heads in practice as he attempts to climb up the depth chart. Considering fullback Hunter Luepke is a lock to make the team barring any injury, Vaughn needs to convince the coaching staff to go long at the position or to make a shocking decision to keep him in place of someone else. Seventh-round rookie Phil Mafah is also in the mix.
Vaughn is not going to be able to do that without taking the field this August. That’s why on Thursday, the third-year running back to a huge step in inserting himself right back into the roster battle: After missing a week and a half of practice, Vaughn returned to the field in full pads.
During his absence with a hamstring injury starting in late July, Vaughn missed one of the most important days of Cowboys’ training camp: The team’s joint practice versus the Los Angeles Rams. But now that he’s back, it looks like he has a strong chance to make up for it during the Cowboys’ three exhibition games set for August.
It’s an uphill battle for Vaughn, but not an impossible one. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer recently praised his versatility and added he can play multiple positions for the Cowboys.
“(Vaughn’s) football instincts are off the charts,” Schottenheimer said earlier in the week. “He’s so intelligent and can play multiple positions. He’s really a running back-slash-slot receiver, so you look for those slot matchups—whether it’s option routes or change-of-direction routes—where you can use his quickness and explosiveness to get an edge. Whether it’s against a linebacker or a bigger boundary safety, he should be able to create separation.”
For Vaughn, it’s time to prove it on the playing field as he’s running out of time. Fortunately, it won’t be an injury costing him the opportunity to do so. Here’s to hoping he can stay healthy and do his thing on the gridiron before the Cowboys coaching staff needs to make a decision.
