The NFL Draft is perhaps the most unpredictable event in all of sports. And with two first-round picks, the Dallas Cowboys have a lot of directions they could take.

But thanks to the intel from a Cowboys insider, we can expect one of the top talents of the 2026 class to be crossed off the list.

Cowboys not pursuing top CB

In terms of talent, Tennessee cornerback Jermod McCoy is one of the best players in the class. The only problem is he hasn’t played a down of football since he tore his ACL in January of 2025.

Usually, the Cowboys haven’t shied away from using high-end picks to bet on players coming back from injury, but according to Nick Harris from Fort Worth Star-Telegram, they won’t pursue McCoy.

“There are a lot of names on the draft board heading into April that could make sense with one of the two first-round picks,” Harris wrote in a recent article. “One name that I’m crossing off based on information this week: Tennessee cornerback Jermod McCoy.”

Avoiding McCoy is a smart bet for Dallas

I don’t doubt McCoy can bounce back and be a high-caliber starter in the league. But simply put, the Cowboys urgently need immediate contributors. The Tennessee product is a walking question mark in terms of returning to play, especially after skipping workouts at the NFL Scouting Combine, which would have gone a long way to dispel concerns.

With no picks in the second nor third rounds, Dallas can’t afford patience, nor uncertainty, with its Top 20 picks.

The Cowboys have enough to worry about with the cornerback position; DaRon Bland underwent foot surgery for the second consecutive year, Shavon Revel Jr. will have his first offseason program this year, and the room lacks starters and depth.

Drafting McCoy is a worthwhile risk for other teams. Not for the Cowboys.

Other first-round cornerback prospects

The good news for Dallas is there are other options at cornerback that could make sense in the first round.

LSU’s Mansoor Delane has often been linked to the Cowboys thanks to his outstanding ability to play sticky coverage paired with a high football IQ. Meanwhile, Clemson’s Avieon Terrell has the physicality to be an intriguing nickel cornerback, but he can also play outside.

Other names to watch include South Carolina’s Brandon Cisse and Tennessee’s Colton Hood.
