Cowboys Nation isn’t going to like the reality they woke up to on Black Friday after Thanksgiving win over Chiefs

Okay, the Dallas Cowboys did it. They got us believing they have a chance at making the playoffs. Currently, the NFL projects their postseason probability at 19%

But at 6-5-1, a couple of things are clear:

  1. The Cowboys need to get to at least 10 wins, preferably 11. Right now, there are six teams in the NFC with eight-plus wins, including the three teams on wild-card slots.
  2. They’ll need some outside help to ensure they make the cut. And that starts on Friday, one day after the Cowboys beat the Kansas City Chiefs 31-28.

No. 2 leads us to a reality Cowboys Nation will not like, but will need to accept going into Friday’s matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears: Cowboys fans should be rooting for the Eagles on Friday.

Now, mind you, I’m not going to tell you to toss on a Kelly Green jersey and chant “Fly, Eagles, Fly!” But if you want an objective assessment of the Cowboys’ situation, an Eagles win helps their playoff chances. The reasoning is simple.

The Eagles have a very strong head start on the NFC East race. And though you never know when a team can collapse in the league, they have a relatively easy schedule to win just enough games to avoid being caught by the Cowboys even if Dallas runs the table. Entering Week 13, FTN projected their chances of winning the division at 98.4%.

In other words, unless a football miracle occurs, the Cowboys aren’t winning the division. Instead, they’ll be battling NFC foes for one of three wild-card slots. The Bears are one of those teams, and frankly, one of the likeliest ones to fall off.

Bears are one of the top teams to root against if you’re a Cowboys fan

At 8-3, the Bears currently hold the three seed in the NFC. But that could change very soon as the Packers close in with eight wins themselves.

With a loss to the Eagles on Friday, Chicago would be back in the wild-card picture with a tough schedule ahead. The Bears have two more games against the Packers, one against the San Francisco 49ers, and another one against the Detroit Lions in Week 18.

Considering six of the Bears’ wins have been one-possession games with some fluky elements to it, they’re a candidate to see their wheels fall off. They rank 22nd in DVOA, an efficiency metric that considers strength of opponents played. Chicago declining is exactly what the Cowboys need for an opening in the wild-card picture. It could start on Friday.

To put it simply, the Bears are on the Cowboys’ way more than the Eagles are. As hard as it might be, the correct team to root for on Friday is Philly.
