Life in the NFL can be crazy. Just ask former Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Connor Williams, who decided to retire from football halfway through the season despite starting nine games for the Seattle Seahawks.

Williams' retirement was announced by Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald on Friday, to the surprise of football fans around the country. Williams is just 27 years old and was playing his seventh season in the NFL this year.

Williams' career started out with the Cowboys after he was drafted in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Coming out of Texas as a tackle, Williams was an interior offensive lineman for Dallas, playing various roles in his time with the team, mostly at left guard.

Upon leaving Dallas in 2022, Williams' best football came with the Miami Dolphins, with whom he moved to center and was consistently regarded as one of the best at the position for two years. He suffered a major knee injury last year, however, and signed until August of this year to play for the Seahawks.

The decision to retire hasn't yet been explained in detail, though Macdonald explained it as "personal reasons." He added the Seahawks "respect that." Judging by the time of the year in which it happened, one has to assume it couldn't have been an easy decision for Williams.

Williams had been starting every game this year. He was the 20th-highest graded center in the league this season, per Pro Football Focus.
