We pretty much got confirmation on a growing Trevon Diggs suspicion right after the Dallas Cowboys’ loss to the Vikings
Trevon Diggs and the Dallas Cowboys showed us they’re not on the same page.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones declined to comment on a report indicating the team’s relationship with All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs had “soured.” He didn’t have to, as both sides showed us it was true.
After the Cowboys’ loss to the Minnesota Vikings—in which Dallas’ cornerbacks struggled to contain a J.J. McCarthy-led offense—Diggs and Jones spoke to the media and didn’t even try to hide how much they disagree with one another. And the messages coming from Jones’ end of things pretty much confirm the growing suspicion that Diggs isn’t going to be activated before the season is over. Let’s break it down.
Jones and Diggs directly disagree with each other
Despite Diggs practicing for two consecutive weeks in limited capacity and him telling reporters he’s healthy and ready to go, Jones told reporters the cornerback wasn’t healthy enough going into Week 15.
“Diggs isn’t healthy enough to be out there for us, OK?,” Jones said outside the Cowboys’ locker room. “Did everybody hear that? I said he’s not healthy enough for us to put him out there.”
Jones added the Cowboys aren’t happy with what they’ve seen from Diggs on the practice field. For the cornerback, it’s unclear what they wanted to see.
“I’m not sure what the special requirements are that I need to show that I can play,” Diggs told reporters via 105.3 The Fan. “I’ve been in practice, I’ve been practicing well, been running around, doing what I’m supposed to. It’s not my decision, at the end of the day.”
Diggs added he expected to play because he was a part of the gameplan earlier in the week. According to him, he wasn’t told until Saturday that he wouldn’t be activated.
Diggs’ comments point toward obvious decision
I will admit I’m reading between the lines here and speculating quite a bit but: Yeah, I’m pretty confident in betting Diggs is done for the year. The Cowboys have until Dec. 20 to move Diggs off of Injured Reserve and into the 53-man roster. Otherwise, his 21-day practice window will be up and he won’t be eligible to return the rest of the season.
Over the years, the Cowboys have shown they don’t love it when players take aim at the front office or coaching staff as openly as Diggs is right now.
Ultimately, we don’t know the details of what happened or didn’t behind the scenes. But we know Diggs and the Cowboys haven’t been happy with each other for a while. And I would be shocked to see them put that aside for what feels like a “meaningless” stretch of football to close out the season.
