Brian Schottenheimer shows he meant his message to Cowboys’ Mazi Smith with inactives announcement before Eagles matchup
The Cowboys have announced their inactives for Week 1 versus the Eagles.
Ahead of Thursday night’s NFL Kickoff game, the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles revealed their list of inactive players.
In Week 1, the decisions to see which 48 players suit up is particularly interesting because injuries tend to be a minor factor compared to later in the year. For the Cowboys, one of the biggest decisions was on former first-rounder and defensive tackle Mazi Smith.
Brian Schottenheimer told Smith that a spot on the gameday roster wasn’t guaranteed and now he’s sending a message: Smith is a healthy scratch for the Cowboys’ Thursday night matchup versus the Eagles.
Smith had an inconsistent preseason in which he displayed some of the same issues as he did in his first couple of years in the NFL. It seems like if he’s to win the coaches’ trust back, it will have to be on the practice field.

Other takeaways from Cowboys’ inactives
- Jaydon Blue being inactive is a major surprise after the Cowboys rookie was a standout in training camp. The fifth-round rookie is perceived by fans and media as the most explosive back. He’s a healthy scratch for the game.
- As expected following the Cowboys’ final injury report, Trevon Diggs (knee) and Tyler Guyton (knee) are good to go, giving Dallas a close to 100% 53-man roster.
- Cornelius being a healthy scratch essentially confirms veteran Hakeem Adeniji will back up right tackle Terence Steele until proven otherwise.
