It’s becoming increasingly likely the Cowboys face at least one of their former head coaches in 2026, maybe two
Both Mike McCarthy and Jason Garrett have emerged as head coaching candidates for Cowboys’ 2026 opponents.
As the league’s coaching carousel heats up, it’s becoming increasingly likely for the Dallas Cowboys to square off against one of their former head coaches in the 2026 NFL season.
That’s because both Mike McCarthy and Jason Garrett have emerged as head coaching candidates for NFL teams the Cowboys are set to face in 2026, and one of them is even considered a front-runner for one of the league’s seven HC vacancies.
Mike McCarthy to the Titans?
Not only are the Titans scheduled to meet with McCarthy but according to SI’s insider Connor Orr, McCarthy “is viewed by some as an early front-runner for the Tennessee Titans’ vacancy given his experience at the quarterback position and the Titans needing to maximize 2025 No. 1 pick Cam Ward.”
The Cowboys will face the Titans at home in 2026. This could be one of those “revenge games” people love to talk about if McCarthy is indeed hired. Last year, the Cowboys head coach emerged as a serious candidate for the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears.
If not Tennessee, McCarthy might have a shot at re-entering the NFC East. The New York Giants have scheduled an interview with the former Cowboys head coach. It’s not a coincidence the Titans and Giants are both interested in him, as he’s known as a QB guru and both teams have young, promising quarterbacks.
Jason Garrett also in the mix
Though the McCarthy news isn’t a surprise, this one is. The Titans are also interviewing Garrett for their head coaching job on Friday, per multiple reports. Since leaving the Cowboys, Garrett has worked on NBC as an analyst.
NFL circles have seemingly always been higher on Garrett than fans have. Once he gets in that meeting room, he has the potential to interview really well.
