UPDATE: After the publishing of this article, ESPN’s Todd Archer reported cornerback DaRon Bland could miss a couple of weeks because of a foot injury suffered on Monday’s practice. For more information on the injury and the Cowboys’ situation at cornerback, we’ve got you covered with the article below.

The Dallas Cowboys have a bittersweet situation going for them at cornerback. The starting lineup doesn’t look all that bad. It features two All-Pros in DaRon Bland and Trevon Diggs.

The problem? The position is like a feeble tower of Jenga waiting for one block to be removed before crumbling down. If one starter is injured, things start to look bad. The Cowboys simply have no proven depth at the position, in part because of Caelen Carson and rookie Shavon Revel Jr. being injured.

Ahead of the Cowboys’ Week 2 matchup versus the New York Giants, concerns are growing for the position group because of the latest injury update. DaRon Bland missed practice and was listed as having a foot injury.

Bland’s importance for the Cowboys’ defense can’t be understated, and it starts with his versatility. With teammate Trevon Diggs coming back from injury and playing Week 1 on a pitch count, Bland was asked to play inside and outside by the coaching staff. He played 24 snaps in the slot and 26 at outside cornerback.

If he can’t go on Sunday against the Giants, it would force defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus to play a backup cornerback like Reddy Steward, who was claimed from off waiver wires on cutdown day last month. Another potential solution could be to play some sort of big nickel package with a safety in the slot.

Now, it’s still too early to press any panic button. It’s only Wednesday, after all. We’ll continue to monitor the situation.

In addition to Bland, the Cowboys listed safety Malik Hooker as a limited participant with a foot injury. He also missed the Cowboys’ workout on Monday.
