The Dallas Cowboys have until Saturday, Dec. 20, to activate cornerback Trevon Diggs to the 53-man roster. Otherwise, Diggs will be officially out for the season.

Based on comments from all parties involved, him being activated seems like a longshot. And with Diggs’ latest admission on his own play in practice, we’ve got more clarity on what has become one of the biggest Cowboys dramas of the year.

Diggs admits he’s not playing the scheme well

Speaking to NFL Network insider Jane Slater, Diggs admitted part of the reason why he remains on the injury report despite claiming to be healthy last weekend, is that he’s been having mistakes in practice.

“According to him, he’s been a full go but conceded that he, (head coach) Brian Schottenheimer, and (defensive coordinator) Matt Eberflus discussed his mistakes in practice in Cover 2,” Slater said on live TV. “The way he has played though, has them questioning the health of the knee.”

Slater added Diggs also admitted his strengths at cornerback may not fit such a heavy use of Cover 2. For years, Diggs has been known as a man-coverage cornerback but not necessarily in zone looks.

Diggs’ comments reflect front office complaints

Jerry Jones has publicly indicated that Diggs isn’t healthy enough to play for them. Meanwhile, head coach Brian Schottenheimer has used the word “consistency” to describe what is lacking from Diggs in order to get on the field.

Long story short, it doesn’t seem like anyone is lying here. Diggs may be healthy, but until he fits the scheme like the Cowboys want him to, they’ll question if the knee is ready to go. Could you make an argument that Matt Eberflus’ scheme should fit his players better? Sure. But that’s another topic entirely.

For now, Diggs isn’t a fit. And I would be surprised if the next few days are enough for Dallas to change its mind.

On Diggs’ home accident

Before Diggs was placed on Injured Reserve, he was unexpectedly ruled out on a Friday in October due to a concussion suffered on a “home accident.” Details have yet to arise surrounding the accident but Slater reported the details aren’t as “nefarious” as internet rumors have suggested.

“There have been a lot of rumors about how Trevon Diggs got injured at home,” Slater said. “His version is far less nefarious than some of the rumors that have been floating around in the internet.”

Slater didn’t provide any further details on that front.
