The writing was on the wall for Trevon Diggs, and now the Dallas Cowboys get an important item off their to-do list ahead of the 2026 NFL offseason.

On Tuesday, the Cowboys released Diggs ahead of the team’s regular-season finale against the New York Giants. For those who have been paying attention, Diggs’ release should come as no surprise, despite the cornerback signing a $97 million contract extension in 2023.

Diggs’ relationship with the Cowboys was broken

Per NFL Network’s insider Tom Pelissero, the Cowboys’ release of Diggs is the result of “multiple factors.”

“My understanding is Diggs’ release was not a result of a specific incident,” Pelissero posted on social media. “It was the culmination of multiple factors spread over time, including both performance and other elements. The team felt it was best for both Trevon and the Cowboys to move on at this point.”

Here’s a rundown of some of the factors Pelissero is likely talking about.

  • The big one: Trevon Diggs failed to stay healthy. Since the 2023 extension, he has played only 21 games for the Cowboys out of a possible 50.
  • The Cowboys invoked a $500,000 salary de-escalator after the cornerback failed to meet a contract clause requiring him to spend a specified amount of time with the team in the offseason. Diggs didn’t meet the threshold due to rehabbing away from team facilities. He told reporters the team was aware of where he was rehabbing.
  • Jerry Jones publicly questioned if extending Diggs had been the right choice in this year’s opening training camp press conference.
  • The Cowboys’ front office openly criticized Diggs’ rehab in 2024 and later in 2025.
  • Diggs addressed reporters at training camp alongside Micah Parsons in an interview where both players took apparent jabs at the front office.
  • The Cowboys benched Diggs early in the 2025 NFL season after he made multiple mistakes in coverage. The cornerback admitted he asked Matt Eberflus to play more man coverage, which is Diggs’ specialty.

State of Cowboys’ CB room is truly concerning

Going into 2026, the Cowboys’ defense has several issues to fix. Those may very well start with the defensive coordinator position, which is under evaluation. Another one is the cornerback room, which is filled with question marks and doesn’t have even one starter the Cowboys can feel truly confident in. Not even DaRon Bland, who has struggled after signing an extension before the 2025 NFL season.

Third-round rookie Shavon Revel Jr. has shown flashes of sticky coverage, but tackling has been a serious problem. However, next year will be his first full offseason after spending most of this year rehabbing from a knee injury that caused him to drop in the NFL Draft.

Expect cornerback to be one of the top priorities for the Cowboys’ front office in the coming months.
