It took one training camp practice for the Dallas Cowboys to tease something everyone wants to see on offense

What a time to be alive: Football is back on our social media feeds as those with boots on the ground bring us video clips from Dallas Cowboys practice at training camp in Oxnard, California.
Of course, you never want to overreact to a single practice clip, let alone one with no pads on, but usually what I'm in the lookout for is lineups and scheme-related hints we can get. On Tuesday, the first camp practice of the year, one stood out in the run game.
Brian Schottennheimer team teased something everyone wants to see on offense: KaVontae Turpin, the team's fastest player, at running back.
In the clip below, Dak Prescott takes the snap under center as CeeDee Lamb motions into the playside as a leading blocker for Turpin, who is lined up in the backfield. He then shows his speed getting to the edge.
According to reports earlier in the year, Turpin lined up at running back back in mandatory minicamp.
Though Turpin's primary position is wide receiver, it's often been wondered by fans and media members if the speediest player on the team should be taking some handoffs. Of course, the concern there is he's listed at 153 pounds, which makes durability a question. Deebo Samuel, who notably took handoffs at San Francisco despite being a wide receiver, is listed at around 215 pounds.
In 2024, when Schottenheimer was offensive coordinator, Turpin lined up in the backfield a total of 16 times. Nine of which came in a two-week span. For this to be a notable change to the offense, it would have to happen much more often.
If it works, it could be a clutch spark for an offense that's seriously concerned about the state of the running back group. It could also give Turpin a bigger role on offense ahead of the season.
Turpin was arrested with multiple misdemeanor charges earlier this summer. In 2024, he was named a First-Team All-Pro returner.
