Jadeveon Clowney left meeting with Cowboys without a deal but they still have a chance at signing former No. 1 overall pick
The Dallas Cowboys wanted to sign Jadeveon Clowney, per report.
The Dallas Cowboys hosted former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney on a free agency visit on Wednesday but he left without signing a deal. It seems like now we have more context into why.
According to former Cowboys scout and analyst Bryan Broaddus on 105.3 The Fan, the Cowboys wanted to sign Clowney while the defensive end wanted to “wait and see.” In other words, the decision to not put ink to paper was Clowney’s.
The exact reason why, however, remains unclear. His visit proves there’s a degree of interest, but Clowney could also be entertaining offers from other teams. And maybe, the numbers the Cowboys pitched weren’t what he expected.
Clowney not signing with Cowboys might have been money related
Last year, Clowney signed a two-year deal worth $20 million with the Carolina Panthers. Though he was productive even in a statistically bad defense, at 32 years old and it being September, the Cowboys would likely be thinking of a different number. Something closer to a one-year deal worth $5 million would be an educated guess.
If money was the roadblock to securing Clowney, the Cowboys can cross their fingers and hope he doesn’t find a better deal waiting for him. Otherwise, they’ll be forced to see the defensive end they wanted playing for a different team. It’s not like they’ve gone through something similar this year, right?
“He’s missed playing the game and the film looks good,” Schottenheimer said about Clowney earlier in the week. “I would say that the personal relationship I have with him and the problem he can create in the run and the pass is the reason he’s [on a visit].”
