Football fans are so used to the quote "He's in the best shape of his life" that it's become as exhausting as it has phony.

With that in mind, how about we avoid it when discussing where Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is ahead of the 2025 NFL season? Deal. However, our impromptu agreement shouldn't stop us from discussing what's become a significant storyline: The $240 million QB is cutting weight after missing most of the 2024 campaign due to a season-ending hamstring injury.

Practice clips had already suggested it but on Tuesday, tight end Jake Ferguson took the narrative a step further by claiming Prescott has lost 50 pounds on an Instagram story.

"Slim reaper," Ferguson's upload reads with the camera aiming at Prescott. "Down 50 LB! Looking like a young 4."

Prescott shared the story with the funny caption, "Slimothy, that's me."

Though 50 pounds is in all likelihood an exaggeration, it is a very telling message about the direction of Prescott's goals. Following a season-ending injury in 2024, it appears the veteran quarterback is aiming to be leaner when the season kicks off in September.

The decision could have an impact in his play: Since suffering a broken ankle in 2020, Prescott has run the ball less frequently and certainly less efficiently. Additionally, injuries have become more common for Dak, missing significant playing time in three out of the last five seasons.

Optimal weight would translate to improved injury resistance as much as increased availability. Plus, the elephant in the room is Prescott will turn 32 years old in late July. At this stage of his career, taking care of his longevity is crucial.

Best shape of his life? Perhaps not but that's not what matters here. What does matter is a leaner Prescott is a better Prescott. And hey, "Slim Reaper" is not a bad nickname, either.
