Jason Witten might just be about to take a huge career step that you know Jerry Jones will be hyped about
Speculation emerges on former Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten potentially taking on a coaching role with the Oklahoma Sooners.
For a long time, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been pitching fans and media members on Jason Witten’s potential to be a coach at the NFL level.
He’s even compared him to Dan Campbell, who has found plenty of success turning around the Detroit Lions franchise. In the offseason, reports emerged on the Cowboys wanting Witten to be part of Mike McCarthy’s staff had he stayed on board for the 2025 season.
Well, though Jones isn’t likely to hire Witten for a big role anytime soon, the college football world is already speculating about the future Hall of Famer landing an assistant gig in one of the biggest programs in college football: The Oklahoma Sooners.
Speculation emerges on Witten’s future
The Sooners recently parted ways with TE coach Joe Jon Finley, opening a vacancy that Witten is an obvious fit for. Recently, On3.com claimed Witten was rumored to get into college coaching.
Though the former Cowboy has been very successful as a high school head coach—achieving a 35-5 record with Liberty Christian over three years—he knows the ins and outs of the position he played at a historic level in Dallas.
But it’s not just his on-field success at the NFL that makes him a good candidate. A to Z Sports’ college football expert AJ Schulte recently wrote about why the Sooners should pursue Witten.
“His name recognition and pedigree buys him a lot of goodwill on the recruiting trail, but his track record as a coach is intriguing,” explained Schulte. “At Liberty Christian, he turned a struggling program into a multi-state champion in Texas virtually overnight. While we don’t know exactly how he will be with just one room to manage, his experience and pedigree brings a good deal of credibility to his ability as a coach, something the Sooners haven’t really had in that room for years.
“Additionally, Witten has a strong connection with current Oklahoma running backs coach Demarco Murray, as the two were teammates in Dallas. Witten’s son, Cooper, is a five-star recruit in the 2027 class that the Sooners have been heavily recruiting for years now as well.”
Jerry Jones would love this if it happened
You just know if Witten is about to kickstart a coaching career in the collegiate level, Jones will be keeping a close eye in case the future reunites him with one of the best players the Cowboys franchise has seen in recent memory.
It’s clear he likes the idea of Witten as a coach in the NFL. But unless Witten builds out a better resume in higher levels of football, the idea will probably generate enough backlash to keep him at bay. But if he ends up landing a gig in Oklahoma, things could start to change.
