The Dallas Cowboys have declined the Chicago Bears' request to interview head coach Mike McCarthy, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday evening.
According to reports, it took Dallas over 24 hours to respond to the request. Interestingly enough, they now have declined it. Based on the news, it wouldn't be a surprise if Jerry and McCarthy have started future discussions like other NFL teams.
The update heavily suggests the Cowboys are interested in bringing back McCarthy for the 2025 NFL season and beyond. That's simply because blocking a head coaching interview for an NFL vacancy, of which there are so few every year, only to get rid of the head coach the following week would be a terrible look on the Dallas organization.
Now granted, it could happen and shouldn't be ruled out, but it would be frowned upon by NFL peers and other franchises. In other words, it wouldn't be doing right by McCarthy.
Additionally, when asked if he'd allow his coaches to speak to other teams, Jones told the media on Sunday that he didn't want anybody on the team that didn't want to be here. If he's blocking an interview, whether right or wrong, then he's probably dealing with someone he wants on the team.
McCarthy said on Sunday he'd prefer to stay in Dallas even if other opportunities popped up during the head coach hiring cycle.
The pieces could begin to fall into place very quickly following the latest news around McCarthy as if the Cowboys have determined they want the head coach back, the negotiation process should already be well underway, according to Jones.
"The determining and the negotiation are all in the same motion," Jones told reporters on Sunday. "It’s one football motion, and so you’ll determine if the will is there on both people’s part and the terms are there. You don’t have step one, two, three, four, five."
Cowboys fans will have to wait until any official word but for now, the signs are leaning in favor of McCarthy sticking around Dallas.
