The Dallas Cowboys are set to take on the Houston Texans tonight on Monday Night Football as seven-point underdogs at their own place, AT&T Stadium.
But the NFL news cycle has people already talking, and not in a good way, about next week's game: A Thanksgiving divisional matchup with the New York Giants.
You see, the Giants are benching Daniel Jones in favor of backup quarterback Tommy DeVito, who once was all the rage in the NFL as he unexpectedly put together some good performances as the team's backup. However, since then, DeVito has proven to have been more of a flash in the pan than a legit quarterback alternative for New York.
It should be noted, despite reports of the Giants benching Jones for "football reasons," that the reality behind their decision has everything to do with the quarterback's contract, which includes an injury guarantee for 2025 that could trigger should he suffer a season-ending injury that keeps him from passing a physical in 2025. In other words, the Giants are very likely making a financial decision. That is to say, it's not like they expect DeVito to turn things around for a struggling offense.
Regardless of what their motivation truly is, the news sets the Cowboys and Giants up for quite a Thanksgiving game between Cooper Rush (perhaps Trey Lance, depending on how things go tonight?) and DeVito.
That's… Well, let's not sugarcoat it: That's a bad football game for such an important slot on the NFL schedule. The league was probably already frustrated with the game being played by Rush on the Cowboys' side of things and with no Jones on the other side, it's just getting worse.
To be fair, the league probably expected Dallas to be in a much better place than 3-6 and no Dak Prescott back in May when it decided on a matchup. Additionally, the Cowboys are probably never going to be taken off the Thanksgiving slate of games, for better or worse.
For those wondering, the game can't be flexed but it does add to the questions of whether or not the league will take Jerry Jones' team off of Monday Night Football in Week 14 (vs. Cincinnati Bengals) and/or off of Sunday Night Football in Week 16 (vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers).
