For many years, Dallas Cowboys fans have fantasized about three-time Super Bowl winning quarterback Troy Aikman taking on a general manager role to return America’s Team to its former glory.

For as many years, it’s been clear it’s not happening, starting with the fact that owner Jerry Jones is unwilling to give up the title. However, Aikman is going to be helping another NFL team choose its next general manager in 2026. And it’s fair to say that alone is enough to cause envy in Dallas fans around the world who have spent years daydreaming about Aikman making an impact on the modern-day Cowboys.

Aikman to help Dolphins pick a GM

On Wednesday, reports emerged on Aikman being hired by the Miami Dolphins as an outside consultant to advise the organization in its search for a general manager during the 2026 offseason. The Dolphins parted ways with Chris Grier in late October.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Aikman will sit in on interviews to help the team decide. The Dolphins’ goal is to leverage the former Cowboys quarterback’s relationships throughout the league. Aikman, however, isn’t considered a candidate himself.

News should cause envy in Cowboys fans

It’s no secret Aikman has always been enticed by the idea of taking on a GM gig around the NFL.

“It’s something that I guess I’ve always somewhat entertained,” Aikman said in a radio interview in 2019. “I’ve had a chance to talk with [Broncos general manager] John Elway in previous years. I’ve visited with [49ers general manager] John Lynch, and the decision that he made to take on that job in San Francisco, and I’ve said many, many times, I still believe there’s another frontier for me—maybe there’s not—but I believe that there is, and I think [a GM role] might very well be it.”

And yet, it’s well-known Aikman is highly critical of the way Jerry Jones does things in Dallas. He often criticizes the owner for being so involved in decision-making, and has put the Cowboys on blast consistently throughout the years. If he’s ever to consider taking a GM gig in Dallas, you can bet everything he will want full control. Realistically, he wouldn’t have that in Dallas. And he knows it very well.

When the Cowboys were searching for a Mike McCarthy replacement before settling on Brian Schottenheimer, Aikman went as far as saying Dallas’ head coaching job wasn’t a coveted opportunity.

“I love the Dallas Cowboys, I played there for 12 years, I wish them well, but to say it’s a coveted job, I’m not sure I would necessarily agree with that,” Aikman said in January.

Though it’s not like he’ll be GM for Miami, to see him take on such a crucial role as a consultant for the Dolphins stings just a little bit. Maybe someday. Probably not.
