In the hours leading up to the boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson at AT&T Stadium, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones appeared on the Netflix pre-fight show alongside franchise legend Michael Irivin.
Most of the conversation revolved around the spectacle AT&T Stadium (with curtains down, by the way) was hosting on Saturday. However, Irvin couldn’t help but sneak in a comment that caught Cowboys’ fans attention.
While discussing the fight, Irvin teased Jones claiming he’d talk to him about none other than NFL legend and Colorado head coach Deion Sanders.
“I give him respect like I did (the great) Deion Sanders, who didn’t go the normal route, and who I’ll be on Jerry’s ears about later,” Irvin said on the broadcast. “That’s just something else we’re talking about.”
Sanders’ name has been widely discussed among Cowboys and NFL fans as he’s one of the most prolific personalities in football right now. After the turnaround in Colorado, he’s got the attention of many people seeking a program builder like he’s been in college so far.
Knowing Jones’ relationship with Sanders, it wouldn’t be particularly surprising for the Cowboys owner to consider him.
However, not only has Sanders claimed he’s not interested in coaching in the NFL, but there are many reasons to question how good he’d be in the pros in the first place. Dallas is already criticized for having a circus-like environment and Sanders sure is a character.
It’s unlikely that Sanders will wind up as the next Cowboys head coach, but a change from Mike McCarthy is quite feasible considering he’s on the final year of his deal, same as most coaches on his staff.
For now, the 3-6 Dallas Cowboys will host the Houston Texans for Monday Night Football as 7.5-point underdogs with a season spiraling out of control. In the meantime, Irvin seems to be putting together an effort to convince his old boss about who should take over next year.
