Mike McCarthy is already looking into poaching a highly-regarded Cowboys coach from Brian Schottenheimer’s staff
The former Cowboys head coach is looking into reuniting with an old friend that worked with him for five years in Dallas.
In case you missed it, Mike McCarthy is back in the NFL, this time as the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach. And only a few days into the job, he’s looking into poaching a highly-regarded Dallas Cowboys coach.
And this time, the Cowboys can’t do much about it.
Cowboys TE coach Lunda Wells expected to interview for OC
Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells is expected to interview for the Steelers’ offensive coordinator opening. The news should come as no surprise, starting with the fact that Wells coached under McCarthy for five years in Dallas. But that’s not all.
Wells has been a highly-regarded coach among those who have worked with him for a long time. Case in point, he’s one of the few coaches Brian Schottenheimer kept on staff after he took over as the Cowboys’ head coach. Additionally, Dan Quinn tried to poach him from the Cowboys when he took over the Washington Commanders and was denied. This year, he interviewed him for the Commanders OC opening.
Since being hired as offensive coordinator would be a promotion for Wells, the Cowboys can’t stop McCarthy from interviewing him.
Wells would be a big loss for the Cowboys, considering his deep knowledge of the offense. Additionally, he has consistently developed tight ends, including Dalton Schultz and Jake Ferguson, as well as undrafted free agents who have become contributors, such as Brevyn Spann-Ford.
Wells coaching Tuesday’s East-West Shrine Bowl
For now, Wells is working as head coach of the West team at the East-West Shrine Bowl, set to be played tonight at The Star in Frisco, Texas.
“Obviously, you want growth and opportunities,” Wells told ESPN earlier in the week. “But I think right now the only thing I’ve thought about is just doing an excellent job here, representing the Shriners, this prestigious event, and also representing the Dallas Cowboys.”
We’ll see what the future holds for Wells afterwards.
