Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and head coach Mike McCarthy met on Tuesday afternoon for the first time since the end of the regular season, per David Moore from Dallas Morning News.

Last year, when McCarthy was considered to be on the hot seat following a lopsided loss to the Green Bay Packers, the Cowboys head coach told the media the meeting went for over three hours and said "(Jerry) asks all the hard direct questions which I love and appreciate because you get in-depth conversations that go into different directions."

In 2024, McCarthy's job was safe following the long session with the Cowboys owner. Now, following a 7-10 season and with McCarthy on an expiring deal, it remains to be seen if the outcome of the talk was positive or negative.

To add to the intrigue – and let's be honest, Jerry Jones wouldn't want it any other way – McCarthy is drawing official interest from the Chicago Bears, who requested an interview with the head coach. The request was declined by the Cowboys after waiting over 24 hours to respond, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. However, McCarthy has said he prefers to stay in Dallas than to seek out another team.

"I have a lot invested here and the Cowboys have a lot invested in me, and there's a personal side to all these decisions," McCarthy said on Sunday following the team's final regular season game. "They all point in the right direction (…) I'm a builder, I believe in building programs, developing young programs. But at the end of the day it is about winning (…) We have a very good foundation here."

An interesting aspect of the decision might be the financial side of things, especially after Jones talked to reporters about potentially setting up an incentive-based deal for whoever ended up as head coach, which might not be a particularly attractive idea for head coaching candidates.

McCarthy's 174 career wins rank 13th in NFL history and his record with the Cowboys is 49-35. Between the 2021 and 2023 seasons, he led Dallas to three consecutive 12-win seasons and three playoff berths in a row, going 1-3 in four postseason matchups.
