The Dallas Cowboys season is over and now, we turn to Mike McCarthy's future. The head coach still doesn't know what direction the front office will take following the team's 7-10 season.

"I'm definitely in a position with Jerry to move this program forward," McCarthy told reporters postgame. "That's why these conversations need to happen here in the near future."

McCarthy made his case to stick around as the head coach of the team with a simple and strong message that served as a reminder of why he was brought to Dallas in the first place.

"I don't like to talk about myself but I'll just be clear, I'm a winner, I know how to win. I've won a championship," McCarthy said via Jon Machota (The Athletic) about what he would bring to the table with an extension. "I've won a championship in this building. And that's who I am. We'll see where it goes."

For McCarthy, it's not all about the stats but about everything else that goes into putting together a winning NFL program. He believes he has done that with the Cowboys, who won 12 games in three consecutive years before 2024, and believes he can continue to move it forward.

McCarthy, whose contract is up and such could theoretically have a say in where he coaches next if he receives interest from other teams, said his preference is "absolutely" staying in Dallas.

"I have a lot invested here and the Cowboys have a lot invested in me, and there's a personal side to all these decisions," McCarthy said. "They all point in the right direction (…) I'm a builder, I believe in building programs, developing young programs. But at the end of the day it is about winning (…) We have a very good foundation here."

Jerry Jones didn't provide any clues as to where he is leaning ahead of a key week of decision making for the future of the franchise. He did praise several aspects of McCarthy's coaching, including the team's attitude even in the season finale. The clock is ticking for the Cowboys and hopefully, a decision is made soon.

"I'm following the timeframe that I've done in the past," said Jones, who last week suggested Week 18 wouldn't move the needle one way or another
