Mike Zimmer, whose contract as Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator expired earlier in January, isn't looking like he'll be returning to the team in 2025.
Since before the end of the regular season, speculation began to grow on Zimmer's future as multiple insiders and even Micah Parsons wondered if the coach would hang it up after returning to coaching in 2024. Zimmer, who hasn't been interviewed for the Cowboys head coaching job, is a free agent and reports indicate all options are on the table.
As Jerry Jones is expected to hire Brian Schottenheimer as head coach by the weekend, former Cowboys scout Bryan Broaddus – who is known to have a close relationship with Zimmer – revealed the coach isn't interested in the potential head coaching hires by Dallas.
"Talking to Mike, none of these coaching hires interest him," Broaddus said on the Voch Lombardi YouTube channel. "Mike Zimmer's no longer going to be here unless something drastically changes. But talking to Mike Zimmer, you know, he and I were chopping it up today a little bit, just going back and forth. I said, Is there any of these hires that interest you" And he says, Not really, So you're probably going to be looking at a new defensive coordinator."
Interestingly enough, Broaddus added Zimmer can't figure out why he has yet to get as crack at the Cowboys head coaching job.
"As we speak, (he's not interested in returning as DC)," Broaddus said. "Because Mike Zimmer, and rightfully so, has had some success in the National Football League. He's worked for six of the ten head coaches that have ever coached for the Dallas Cowboys, and he gets passed over each time and he can't figure out why."
That's a strong quote from Broaddus, considering he's a friend of Zimmer and in all likelihood knows what the defensive coach is thinking in this process. Unless something changes, it certainly sounds like Zimmer's future doesn't include wearing the Star again.
"If I got (Zimmer) back, awesome, I think Zimm might want to come back, I told you he's ready to ride off into the sunset," Micah Parsons told reporters after Week 18. "To him, it's not even about money anymore, I think he's gotta want to do it."
