There’s new smoke surrounding a Cowboys trade scenario that would change it all for the defense
The Dallas Cowboys are talking about busting the budget. Targeting this All-Pro cornerback would be a great way to go about it.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has alluded to the possibility of trading the draft picks acquired in the Micah Parsons trade and using them in different trades to acquire veteran players. Well, insider Daniel Jeremiah just teased a trade idea the Cowboys could explore with pick No. 20 in the 2026 NFL Draft.
And let me tell you, it would be a tone-setting move for new Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
Could Cowboys trade for two-time All-Pro?
In his second mock draft of the year, Daniel Jeremiah teased a Cowboys trade that would land them a two-time All-Pro cornerback: Trent McDuffie, from the Kansas City Chiefs.
“Then again, if the Chiefs would take this pick in a trade for Trent McDuffie (entering the final year of his rookie deal), the Cowboys would solve their secondary issues in the blink of an eye,” Jeremiah wrote.
Here’s the intriguing part: Jeremiah and many NFL Draft experts often say mock drafts are about what they hear, not what they see. In his mock, this is the only trade idea Jeremiah mentions in 32 picks. Why is that?
Knowing the Cowboys badly need Day 1 starters, one can’t help but wonder if there are rumblings behind the scenes about Dallas moving a first-round pick for a proven veteran.
McDuffie would play a crucial role
If there’s one thing we have learned about new Cowboys DC Christian Parker is he values secondary play. And one of the most valuable positions on his scheme is the nickel spot. McDuffie can play inside and outside, which would give Parker plenty of flexibility building the defense.
Having standout DBs play in the nickel spot is a growing trend around the NFL as it allows defenses to dictate terms and play their preferred personnel grouping. A sticky coverage player and a valuable run defender, McDuffie would automatically be one of the best defenders on the team.
Why would KC trade McDuffie?
McDuffie is set to have a cap hit of $13.6 million and is on a contract year. His salary for this season is fully guaranteed, meaning any team that trades for him would likely intent to sign him to a contract extension in order to lower the cap hit.
According to OTC, an extension is projected to lower McDuffie’s cap hit by over $9 million.
Would you make this deal?
I wouldn’t hesitate. Whoever the Cowboys draft at No. 20 overall isn’t going to make an immediate impact like McDuffie would. On the heels of a terrible defensive season, the front office needs to genuinely bust the budget if it wants to turn things around immediately.
Trading for McDuffie is an excellent example of a unit-altering move.
