Under a month away from NFL teams kicking off their respective training camps, it's still a mystery where one of the best cornerbacks in the league will play. Jalen Ramsey from the Miami Dolphins has yet to be traded despite speculation on him being on his way out.
As a team in need of cornerback help, many have pointed out the Dallas Cowboys as potential trade candidates. With Trevon Diggs set to miss the start of the season and nickel Jourdan Lewis playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars now, it's a big need for the team.
Unfortunately for Cowboys fans hoping the team gets Ramsey, the front office is unlikely to participate on what could be a bidding war.
And yet, the more time that passes, the less expensive Ramsey might wind up being. The Dolphins are expected to ask whoever trades for him to take most of the financial burden, which could deter Dallas from partaking in the sweepstakes at all. But what if no other team budges?
Call me an optimist, but the guy is too good to forget about the potential of adding him to your team. Do I believe the Cowboys will end up with him? No. Should they try to? Absolutely.
Why the Cowboys should trade for Jalen Ramsey
Recently, PFF writer Ryan Smith put together a list of 10 "late-career NFL veterans still playing at a high level." In it, he included Ramsey and explained why he remains a top player at his position. In the process, he inadvertently pointed out why the Cowboys should target Ramsey:
While he’s no longer a top-five player at his position, Ramsey proved last year that he still has a lot left in the tank. He ranked 10th out of 116 qualifying cornerbacks in PFF overall grade (76.9), eighth in PFF run-defense grade (85.7) and 25th in PFF advanced coverage grade, allowing two touchdowns across 607 coverage snaps.
Bottom line: Ramsey is still more than just a big-name player. He produces and is battle-tested. The Cowboys seriously need that. Even when Diggs returns, will he be the same player? Right now, the Cowboys are projected to start Kaiir Elam and Caelen Carson in Week 1. The unit is in desperate need of an upgrade.
Plus, landing Ramsey wouldn't be that expensive as Kyle Crabbs outlined in a recent article: "If the Dolphins are going to be stingy about paying down any more of his salary for 2025, it doesn’t feel likely that the price point would be any higher than a 5th-round draft choice. The Dolphins have already paid Ramsey a $4 million roster bonus — if they chose to invest a few more million dollars, it could be the bargaining chip needed to ask Dallas to send a 4th-round choice."
Again, the Cowboys aren't likely to pull the trigger on this one. But hey, they proved us wrong with the George Pickens trade. Can they do it again?
