The Rashan Gary trade reveals something huge about new Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker
The Dallas Cowboys’ trade for Rashan Gary shows plenty of confidence on new defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
When the Dallas Cowboys hired Christian Parker as their new defensive coordinator, his age alone showed a massive shift in philosophy.
At 34 years old, Parker changed the mold of the typical Cowboys defensive coordinator, a position previously held by Matt Eberflus, Mike Zimmer, Dan Quinn, and Rod Marinelli.
Thus, a natural question was: How much control and input was the first-time coordinator going to have? Well, the Cowboys’ recent trade for edge rusher Rashan Gary provides a crystal clear answer.
Parker making an impact as an evaluator
When the Cowboys traded for Gary on Monday morning, one connection immediately became clear: Parker was a part of the Green Bay Packers during Gary’s first couple of years in the NFL.
According to NFL insider James Palmer, that is no coincidence.
“Dallas is leaning into Christian Parker as an evaluator as Parker and Gary were together in Green Bay,” Palmer wrote on a social media post.
Allowing input from new defensive coordinators isn’t anything new for the Cowboys. But going after a well-known name like Gary for a 2027 fourth-round pick goes a little bit beyond just “input.” It shows full confidence from Dallas on their 34-year-old defensive coordinator.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has alluded multiple times this offseason to doing things differently than they have in the past. If allowing Parker to drive the bus on one of the biggest moves they’ll make this offseason is one of them, I see it as a positive.
Parker gets a great fit
Gary is a natural fit for Parker’s defensive scheme, which will be based out of a 3-4 defensive front featuring two outside linebackers as edge-type players. Gary may not be a superstar and his full potential has yet to be realized but he is a productive stand-up pass rusher who also plays the run well.
For Parker’s defense to be “multiple,” as he has described it to be, he needs edge rushers who can do it all. Gary fits the description.
The Cowboys aren’t done making moves and they’re likely not done at EDGE, either. But you can expect Parker to have plenty of say in what they do in the next few days and weeks.
