The front office is surely showing plenty of interest on a player that has "Dallas Cowboys second round target" written all over him.
When it comes to Round 2 of the NFL Draft, the Cowboys have a type. Historically, it's the spot where they take risks seeking prospects at a discount. Whether the bargain is a result of injury, off-field concerns, or character issues matters very little to them.
They took the injury-riddled Jaylon Smith in 2017 one year after betting on Randy Gregory, who had character concerns. Kelvin Joseph and Sam Williams are more recent examples of players with similar red flags. The habit isn't changing.
This year, they're showing interest in more than one player with a similar profile but one of them could be the second best at his position when it comes to strictly playing football.
That would be defensive tackle Walter Nolen from Ole Miss, whom they hosted on a Top 30 visit over the weekend, displaying serious interest in him. Nolen's draft stock has been on a steady decline since March.
According to A to Z Sports' draft expert Ryan Roberts, "There is some worrisome feedback regarding character for Nolen, which goes back to his high school days, and continued both at Texas A&M and with the Rebels. There are even a couple of NFL teams who have already taken Nolen off their boards."
Nolen went to six schools in seven years including high school.
But the Cowboys interest is expected to be there, specially if he tumbles to the second round. For A to Z Sports' draft expert Destin Adams, Nolen is a first-round talent and someone who could help unleash Micah Parsons even more. He views him as someone worthy of consideration even in the first round, as he explains below:
Walter Nolen 'would easily be the second defensive tackle off the board'
There is no denying how talented Walter Nolen is. He put it on full display at the Senior Bowl as he dominated interior lineman throughout the practice week.
If you just look at his film I think he would easily be the second defensive tackle off the board this year after Mason Graham. Sadly there are a lot of rumors out there that question his character. So each team will have to crate their own opinions on him after meeting and speaking to him directly. If the Cowboys feel comfortable with his character he could be a dynamic piece to add to their defense, and if you line him up next to Micah Parsons for example offensive lines are going to struggle with who to double team.
This pick could take Parsons to yet another level and that should scare the rest of the league and it's why I think Nolen should certainly be one of the top options the Cowboys consider in the first round.
