Cowboys reveal coaching staff ‘confusion’ that makes an already ugly situation even worse ahead of Week 18

The Dallas Cowboys either can’t get on the same page, or this explanation for not playing Logan Wilson is questionable.

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Logan Wilson went from averaging nearly 30 defensive snaps per game to playing zero on Christmas Day last week. It was a seeming statement from defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, and one that created controversy fans, media members, and even within the organization.

In another sign of tension building between Eberflus and the team, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones publicly said Wilson should have played and said “he needs to be in there.”

But on Monday, Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones made the whole ordeal even uglier and weirder by saying Wilson didn’t play due to a miscommunication within the coaching staff.

Cowboys claim Wilson didn’t play due to ‘confusion’

Speaking on live radio at 105.3 The Fan, Jones called Wilson’s situation “unfortunate,” and attributed the lack of play to a failure in communication between Cowboys coaches.

“That was unfortunate with Logan,” Jones admitted. “(The defense) didn’t have many snaps throughout the game, much less in the first half—very few snaps. I wouldn’t call it a mistake, but there was some confusion in terms of how that rotation was supposed to go with (linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi) and the rotation there. It certainly wasn’t the intent for him not to play a snap, but sometimes, when there aren’t many snaps on one particular side of the ball, things don’t go according to plan.”

Jones clarified it was confusion between Borgonzi and the “defensive staff,” and added the team would address the issue. In a tone similar to Jerry last weekend, Stephen defended Wilson as a player.

“We certainly think a lot of Logan and what he brings to the table,” Jones said. “We’re going to roll up our sleeves and look at all the areas where we have to improve. (Kenneth Murray) has had his moments this year where he’s played well, and he’s obviously very talented. Logan is obviously a guy we think can help there.”

But does the story hold up?

A skeptic’s take on Jones’ comments

Let’s get real here.

So you’re telling me that in Week 17 the Cowboys defensive staff can’t properly communicate who is playing when? One thing is for the defense to struggle slowing down opposing offenses but to not even be on the same page on who should be on the field?

I’m not saying it can’t be true—we have certainly heard worse from NFL coaching staffs—but come on. This implies someone on the staff thought they were leaving out a guy with a 46% snap count since joining the team, and there were no questions asked? I’m sorry, but that’s not exactly an easy pitch to buy.

And the fact that this explanation came out only after Jerry put the staff on blast for not playing Wilson doesn’t exactly make the story more believable. Ultimately, we have no way of knowing what happened. But let’s assume Jones’ comments are legit.

Even if this is the real explanation for Wilson’s zero snaps, it’s an awful one. The season is about to end. A communication issue like that between Eberflus and staff is utterly unacceptable. At the very least, we should get a better explanation before the week is over.
