Dallas Cowboys finally make great news official before entering now-or-never territory in Week 11
The defense keeps getting better.
The Dallas Cowboys have been expecting two key players on defense to make their 2025 season debuts after a long time rehabbing from injury and now it’s official. Ahead of Week 11, the Cowboys activated LB DeMarvion Overshown (PUP/knee) and CB Shavon Revel Jr. (NFI/knee) to the 53-man roster.
Both defenders’ 21-day practice window was set to expire on Wednesday and with these moves, they’re officially back and expected to play on Monday night against the Las Vegas Raiders. Their returns come at a crucial time as playoff hopes sit close to 0%, making this now-or-never territory for Dallas.
Overshown in particular is almost guaranteed to start following a breakout season in 2024 that was cut short due to a gruesome knee injury. He will be an immediate upgrade at linebacker, where he’s expected to play the weak-side role, currently occupied by rookie Shemar James. When healthy, Overshown’s explosiveness and speed gives the Cowboys a versatile playmaker in the second level. He will join forces with newcomer LB Logan Wilson, who is expected to take over at middle linebacker.
Wilson’s immediate role, however, is pending. The Cowboys have indicated he will compete with Kenneth Murray, who has played 99% of the team’s defensive snaps.
Shavon Revel Jr.’s role remains to be seen
The Cowboys getting Revel Jr. back at this point of the season raises some important questions. With the record sitting at 3-5-1, will the third-round rookie immediately get a chance to start or does the coaching staff want to ease him into a return? If it’s the latter, I hope they don’t waste too much time.
After all, if he’s healthy and cleared, there’s no reason to hold him back. And though he hasn’t played real-time football in a long time, I’d be more than willing to trade off the best CB play you could get for his development. In other words, I see no point in not giving him valuable playing time just to play Kaiir Elam or Trikweze Bridges over him. Revel Jr., unlike them, is a part of the Cowboys’ long-term plans.
With little to no playoff hopes, it’s time to let the younger players get reps.
For now, it’s all about celebrating the return to the roster of two defensive players that could really help out the Cowboys defense, no matter what.
