Dallas Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams already had a chip on his shoulder going into the team’s Week 5 matchup against the New York Jets, and now he’s being hit with news he doesn’t want to hear.

The NFL is fining him for a facemask penalty in the third quarter of the Cowboys’ tie against the Green Bay Packers. The league is fining him for $11,002. The foul not only hurt his wallet but his stat sheet, as it wiped away what would’ve been his first sack of the year.

Williams is trending down on the Cowboys’ DE rotation. After leading the position group in snaps in the first three weeks of the season, Williams was third in Week 4, with rookie Donovan Ezeiruaku emerging as the group’s leader. It was Ezeiruaku’s best game, which makes it unlikely for Williams to bounce back. James Houston’s rise could also move Williams down the depth chart, particularly in obvious pass rush situations, when Houston has been the most productive DE on the team.

Week 4 mistake doesn’t translate to a fine for LB Marist Liufau

In the fourth quarter of the game, Cowboys LB Marist Liufau made a big mistake when he had a late hit on Packers RB Emmanuel Wilson. The unnecessary roughness turned what would’ve been a midfield third and seven into a 15-yard gain and a first down to the Cowboys’ 29-yard line.

Despite it being an unnecessary roughness penalty, the league didn’t fine Liufau.

Every Saturday, the NFL announces its league-wide fines and amounts for penalties committed the previous week.

“The fines collected are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation to support Legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels, including youth football and the communities that support the game,” reads the league’s Operations website.
