Trading Luka Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks has predictably resulted in a P.R. storm for general manager Nico Harrison, who earlier this week was asked by a reporter to explain why he shouldn't be fired.

His comments about not being sure fans loved Dončić "quite to this level" didn't help his case either. It's been a long few weeks for the franchise recently eliminated from this year's NBA playoffs and it's drawn opinions from all across the sports world.

The events have been so impactful on Dallas sports that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked about it in the team's pre-draft conference. A surprise indeed but a relevant. After all, moving on from Luka Dončić left a mark in the entire city of Dallas. One that's unlikely to heal anytime soon.

"I'm a fan of the Mavericks, big fan of the Mavericks and consequently a big fan of Luka," Jones told reporters. "I know Luka as a personal friend and he watched a lot of games with us and we'd hoped that he would be able to watch more games with us."

Most affected among the Jones family is probably Jerry's wife, Eugene, a die-hard basketball fan and former All-State player.

"Gene lives and dies with that basketball, she just cried when Luka left but I understand that and I understand, frankly, you say how could that happen? I've got probably a better understanding of how something like that could happen," Jones added.

To Jerry's point, he's been involved in a few controversial moves himself. His closest experience to what the Mavs are going through would probably be the sudden divorce with two-time Super Bowl champion Jimmy Johnson in 1994.

But even that is different in that  you could kind of explain it. The explanation sucked, sure. It was a terrible case of egos clashing and a selfish desire from Jerry to be looked at as the architect of the team. But it was understandable to a point. The Mavs moving on from Luka is just an absolute head scratcher. Harrison has tried to explain it but most of the reasoning comes off as an excuse and sometimes, even false.

Hopefully Jones is able to help Dallas sports fans heal with a strong season from the Cowboys in 2025.
