The Dallas Cowboys have pulled off three trades this offseason and more could be in the horizon as the 2025 NFL Draft quickly approaches.
In contrast to 2023 when they acquired starting-caliber players Brandin Cooks and Stephon Gilmore, the Cowboys have aimed for depth players, landing CB Kaiir Elam, LB Kenneth Murray, and QB Joe Milton. Though they're solid additions, the team's starting lineup needs improvement and maybe, just maybe, the front office will keep it mind going into the Draft.
Based on Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones' comments on 105.3 The Fan earlier in the week, they're not done making moves yet.
"I think we got a lot done this offseason—and like I said, it's not over yet," Jones said on the radio. "We'll continue to look at opportunities to help this football team."
The observation came as part of his answer to a question about trading draft picks and the increasing value of such assets in recent years.
"I don't think it's necessarily going through the roof in terms of the value of picks, I think picks are valuable," Jones explained. "I do think, if anything, you can get some value in veteran-type players if teams have decided they need to move on for cap reasons. There's some value out there."
Though the Cowboys haven't been the most aggressive front office in free agency, they've proven they're willing to take some swings in the trade market. Going into next week's Draft, Dallas has 10 draft picks, including five in the sixth and seventh rounds.
They're unlikely to want to use them all, which opens up the door for trade opportunities, whether that's moving up in Day 2 or 3 or for veteran players they believe can help them in 2025, which is what Jones is suggesting.
Cowboys fans would be smart to temper expectations as an aggressive move is unlikely to happen but the front office was openly talking about its intentions of making trades this offseason and they're up to three already. Jones saying "it's not over yet" is far from nothing. A move could be coming soon.
