On Sunday’s Week 16 matchup, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Ryan Flournoy was on the receiving end of a late hit by Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman.

It didn’t take long for the NFL to bring the hammer down on the defender. The league announced a suspension in a statement on Monday, citing multiple incidents endangering the safety of players around the league.

NFL announces suspension for Perryman

The NFL announced it is suspending Denzel Perryman for two games without pay. The league cited “repeated violations of playing rules intended to protect the health and safety of players” as the reason behind the suspension.

Per the NFL, Perryman’s hit on Flournoy is included.

“During the second quarter, Perryman was penalized for unnecessary roughness for delivering a forcible blow to the helmet of Cowboys wide receiver Ryan Flournoy while he was on the ground after making a catch, violating Rule 12, Section 2, Article 10(b), which prohibits ‘using any part of the helmet or facemask to butt or make forcible contact to an opponent’s head or neck area.”

Perryman’s play, which is inexcusable when you watch the replay, caused a brief skirmish in which the Cowboys offensive line and even Dak Prescott participated. The latter was seemingly trying to calm down players on both teams. Flournoy had made a sliding catch and was completely on the ground when the Chargers LB launched headfirst to his helmet.

Ryan Flournoy is crushing it as WR3

Unfortunately, Flournoy was unable to finish the game due to a seemingly unrelated knee injury, but he’s on a tear as the Cowboys WR3. He’s overtaken multiple players on the depth chart, including Jalen Tolbert and Jonathan Mingo.

A second-year receiver, Flournoy appears to be establishing himself as a clear-cut starter on the team.
