Dallas Cowboys trade speculation: Browns GM does little to slow down Myles Garrett hopes

The Dallas Cowboys should be in on Myles Garrett if he’s available. And it doesn’t sound like the Browns are ruling it out.

Listen, I don’t know if the Dallas Cowboys would make an aggressive push for superstar edge rusher Myles Garrett if the Cleveland Browns actually start shopping him.

For what it’s worth, they were seriously in the mix for Las Vegas Raiders’ Maxx Crosby earlier in March and they have yet to deliver on their promise to “bust the budget.” So maybe they would take a swing at Garrett.

But here’s what we do know: The Browns aren’t exactly shutting down the trade speculation surrounding Garrett after modifying his contract last week.

Browns GM on Garrett rumors

Browns general manager Andrew Berry spoke at the NFL Owner Meetings in Phoenix, Arizona on Sunday. When asked directly about the speculation surrounding Garrett’s future, he never explicitly ruled out a trade. But he did say the contract modification didn’t change anything.

“If we wanted to trade Myles, we wouldn’t have needed to make a contract adjustment,” Berry said. “It doesn’t have anything to do with that.”

And yet, per Berry’s own policy to not comment on player’s contracts, he didn’t provide an explanation on the modification of Garrett’s deal—which many interpreted as nothing but a way to keep the door on a trade open, as it provides very little benefit to Garrett otherwise.

When pressed to “state unequivocally” Garrett isn’t being traded, Berry said:

“Myles is a career Brown, he’s one of the faces of the organization. I think we’ve been very clear both past and present in terms of our feelings toward him. I understand all the questions, I’ll be honest, I don’t want to waste a ton more breath on the topic.”

Door isn’t closed for the Cowboys

I’m not saying a trade is absolutely happening but it felt like Berry had a perfect chance to shut down all of the noise and he simply didn’t.

I understand Berry not wanting to comment on player’s contracts. But when you’re an NFL general manager and you can make trade speculation around your biggest star go away, why not provide a simple explanation?

At minimum, it feels like the Browns don’t want to rule anything out. And if that’s the case, the Cowboys should be picking up the phone to make something happen.
