Yes, the Trevon Diggs saga got another plot twist just when we thought it was over
Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs could be activated to the 53-man roster this weekend.
It sure looked like the door was slammed shut on a return to the field from Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs when he openly told reporters he was healthy, but the team still refused to activate him a week ago.
It was the kind of comment you know the Cowboys front office wouldn’t appreciate, and given the state of the relationship between them, I thought it was confirmation that Diggs’ season was over. But this is a soap opera, according to Jerry Jones. And soap operas have plot twists at every turn.
Another Trevon Diggs plot twist
Based on Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones’ appearance on 105.3 The Fan Friday, it sure sounds like the Cowboys will activate Diggs to the 53-man roster leading up to the game on Sunday. During the interview, Jones was asked whether Diggs had met the standards to play against the Los Angeles Chargers.
“Yeah, I think he’s certainly trending in the right direction,” Jones said. “It looks like that certainly could very well be the case. I know he wants to get out there and compete. He’s a competitor. Certainly trending that way. But we’ll play that up until game time and see where we go.”
The key part is the last sentence. If the Cowboys will take it up “until game time,” then they need to activate Diggs off injured reserve by Saturday, as it’s their last day to make the move, per NFL rules. If he’s off IR, it wouldn’t necessarily mean he would play, but he would be eligible. The Cowboys would need to announce his game status 90 minutes before kickoff on Sunday.
Earlier in the day, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer had positive reviews about Diggs’ week of practice.
“When you look at Trevon this week, what I’ve loved the most about him is he’s having fun playing football,” Schottenheimer said. “He’s smiling, running around, but to his credit, he’s having a really good week. So we’ll see how today goes.”
DaRon Bland’s injury could be a factor
Potentially adding to the wish to activate Diggs in time for the game — and before his 21-day practice window expires — is cornerback DaRon Bland’s foot injury. The Cowboys are expected to place Bland on injured reserve as he’s facing foot surgery for the second time in as many years.
Losing him is a major blow to the defense, and one Diggs could help with.
Regardless, Diggs’ future is likely not in Dallas
If activated, Diggs may play during the Cowboys’ final three-game stretch of the season, but his future beyond 2025 remains unclear. With a 2026 cap hit of over $18 million and no guaranteed salary left on his deal, he’s a prime cap casualty candidate for Dallas.
I would be seriously surprised if he sticks around after this season. But for now, it sounds like there’s a real possibility we’ll see Diggs play more Cowboys football before then.
