Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy raised some eyebrows earlier in the week when he revealed that even though Cooper Rush would remain the starting quarterback for the team, Trey Lance would be seeing playing time in certain packages in Week 12 against the Washington Commanders.
The comment was made particularly noteworthy after McCarthy said last Monday that one thing he regretted from the team's loss to the Houston Texans was not playing Lance toward the end of the game.
Naturally, working Lance into the offense adds a layer of intrigue to a team that's 3-7 and hopeless as far as the 2024 NFL season goes. It also sets up the team for an interesting decision ahead of their upcoming home Thanksgiving game, where ticket prices show fan fatigue has really settled in for Cowboys Nation.
However, when asked how Lance's routine has changed upon his role on offense potentially trending for more snaps, the young quarterback revealed he's not getting any first-team reps and remains working with the scout team.
"It's been pretty typical, obviously (Rush) is taking the one reps," Lance told reporters on Wednesday. "I get the majority of the scout team. Bringing Will (Grier) in has been a great addition to the room as well."
While it shouldn't be a big surprise for those who have been paying attention to the Cowboys' stance regarding their current quarterback room, Lance's words essentially confirm if he's involved on offense, it'll be on a very limited role.
If anything, Lance is likely to go in on short-yardage and/or red zone situations, where his legs can be considered a threat.
The coaching staff preparing a package for him doesn't necessarily mean he'll be getting a promotion any time soon. McCarthy has often said Lance needs reps and if he isn't willing to give him any looks with the first team at practice, it says a lot about where they're at: They still like Rush as the starter in the absence of Dak Prescott.
No change should be expected at quarterback unless, of course, Rush's struggles continue to grow and the Cowboys try to desperately search for a spark on offense. That's what led to Lance getting 15 snaps a couple of weeks ago versus the Philadelphia Eagles.
If the opportunity does present itself, Lance believes he'll be ready to go.
"My role is to find a way to help contribute, and if my number gets called, just make the most of that opportunity and find a way to get back in the win column," Lance said.
