By the time Dak Prescott was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys, offensive tackle Tyron Smith was already an established veteran.
During his first six seasons in the NFL, Tony Romo was his starting quarterback and when Prescott was picked in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, there's a strong chance Smith didn't think much of it. A backup unlikely to get on the playing field a whole lot.
You know the story: Both Tony Romo and Kellen Moore went down injured in the preseason, springing Prescott into the spotlight of the starting QB job. He never let go of the job. Nine years later, in Tyron Smith's eyes, he will forever be "QB1"
"I also want to recognize Dak Prescott, one of the best teammates I ever had," Smith said during his retirement speech Wednesday. "Dak cares deeply about everyone in the in the locker room, and he's more than a teammate. He's a lifelong friend. I'll always have your back. You'll always be QB1 to me."
For a quarterback that didn't enter the picture until the middle of his career, that's meaningful praise for Prescott and a strong statement to make. Specially considering the 2016 controversy around the quarterback position in Dallas.
Asked to explain why he felt so strongly about Prescott, Smith didn't hold back.
"I just feel like over the years, we have built a strong relationship and I feel as friends and as teammates, I feel like we accomplished so much." Smith told reporters. "As for what we accomplished, I've never had that feeling before. And then for what everybody put into it, we just had fun. . . Enjoy the game, and that's what our group just had."
Earlier in the week, Prescott had his own choice of words for Smith on social media, a simple yet wholesome message as he included the tackle's iconic grunt at the end.
"I always got your back, as you had mine!" Prescott wrote in an IG story. "Enjoy retirement! Grrrr."
While their days in the playing field were over starting in 2024 when Smith headed to the New York Jets, it's clear the two of them will maintain a personal relationship. While the tackle is hanging it p without a Super Bowl ring, you know he will be rooting for his guy, his QB1 forever, to get his.
